We’ll have to see where he goes from here. No, though the thing with Winry has shaken him and might continue to influence him, it’s clear his interaction with his fellow Ishvalans and his interactions with May are huge things that are allowing him to develop a little in a positive direction at this initial stage. May being part of his story (and him part of hers) as well as the fact he clearly takes a lot of cues from his Brother and his Master really helps avoid the unfortunate implications it would have if it was solely the influence of white people that triggered a different side of him. Doing something constructive rather than punishing himself. He’s working with someone else, helping her, really being her ally. I think working with May is his first official step towards walking a less self-destructive path- he’s no longer alone. I think it’s very cool that he allies with another minority. May is an outsider in this country like he is. But his compassion is awakened seeing someone else who has been abandoned by the world simply because of her culture and class status, someone else who struggles against that. It’s unrealistic to expect him to truly sympathize with an Amestrian right now after all that’s been done to him. How significant is it that Scar’s first connection is with someone who is like him- an outcast, penniless, disenfranchised, struggling to survive, persecuted and abandoned by the world with a community on the brink of extinction I think it’s very smart of the show to have Scar empathizing with someone else who isn’t privileged- Scar is angry at those who are part of the system that oppressed and destroyed his people, and that anger is justified and legitimate. Both Ling and Ed are great characters, and that’s why their interaction Is fun to watch! They both tease each other, help each other, work together- they can both go from funny to moving to dorky to cool at the drop of a hat…Īnd Ed and Ling’s hilarity is on full display here- I love the way Ed and Ling recognize each other, I love that Ed’s so worried about Al being worried that he tries to AWAKEN TELEPATHIC POWERS (ngl, I TRY TO WILL MYSELF TO DEVELOP SUPERPOWERS ALL THE TIME WHEN I’M BORED OR STRESSED, SO I LAUGHED SO HARD) and Ling’s bored reaction….Īnd this is what makes Scar decide to help her- and this is the nicest we’ve seen Scar be. And that’s in part because nearly every character in Fullmetal Alchemist is so strongly written, despite the fact there are TONS of them. Of course, Ed’s also great because he plays off other characters incredibly well. Mega development, and way to level up in pragmatism. ![]() He knows he has to survive for Al and Winry, so he’s putting aside his usual vice. Remember when he wouldn’t work with Greed? Envy’s a billion times worse and now he’s like “WHATEVER I TOLD AL AND WINRY I WOULDN’T DIE”. I also love that he’s straight up willing to throw any pride away to survive- considering Ed struggles with pride a lot, this is a big deal. He’s allowed to act like a kid, he doesn’t have to be the tough perfect hero all the time, he’s often wrong, his wrong actions have serious consequences but he actually learns from his mistakes and apologizes when he messes up- for real.Ī perfect example of this is when he tells Ling he’s not going to give up on survival because Al would be mad at him- he really took Al’s words about surviving to heart. I think a lot of why I like him so much has to do with the fact that the narrative isn’t afraid to mock him mercilessly, or admit that he’s a dork, but it still empathizes with him. He’s a pile of issues and arrogance and self loathing, but never really loses his funniness and charming can-do attitude- and he’s just constantly developing while being the same character at the core. ![]() His range is just freakin’ amazing- he can make your heart hurt one second, then the next second you’re laughing at what a goober he is, but then you’ll find yourself in awe of his determination and the depth of the love he has for the people around him. ![]() I think it was this part in the manga it hit me he’s probably one of my favorite male characters in all of fiction, if not the favorite. Ed is seriously fantastic in this episode.
